My Mother's Rhymes for India's Independence

MY MOTHER'S RHYMES for INDIA'S INDEPENDENCE

Independence Day is very special for me because my parents sacrificed the best years of their lives to attain it. My father, Baba Bedi, was a communist revolutionary, and my mother, Freda Bedi, a hand-picked Satyagrahi of Mahatama Gandhi. Both spent years in prison for the cause. They lived in huts on the outskirts of Lahore where I was born a year before independence.

People as diverse as Gianni Zail Singh,Harkishan Singh Surjeet, Sheikh Abdullah, I.K Gujral and Hafeez Jallandhari, Balraj Sahni, congregated there, watched and harassed by the police.

Today is extra special because a book of my mother's poems "Rhymes for Ranga" is being released. Indian nursery rhymes for Indian children, written for my elder brother, Ranga, during the struggle.

I am proud to be part of the Indian film industry that spreads the message of tolerance, communal harmony and national unity, the core values of our nation.

There's a wonderful article with great family pictures in today's Sunday Mid-Day. Do check it out,

Love and light,

Kabir Bedi
